মৃত্যুর বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করে বাকিংহাম প্রাসাদ থেকে দেয়া এক বিবৃতিতে বলা হয়েছে: ‘মহামান্য রানি খুবই দুঃখের সঙ্গে তাঁর প্রিয় স্বামী প্রিন্স ফিলিপ, ডিউক অফ এডিনবরার মৃত্যুর খবর ঘোষণা করেছেন। ডিউক, উইন্ডসর কাসেলে শান্তিপূর্ণভাবে শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেন।’
১৯৪৭ সালে প্রিন্সেস এলিজাবেথকে বিয়ে করেন প্রিন্স ফিলিপ। এর পাঁচ বছর পর প্রিন্সেস এলিজাবেথ ইংল্যান্ডের রানি হন। ব্রিটিশ রাজপরিবারের ইতিহাসে সবচেয়ে দীর্ঘসময় ধরে তিনি রানির দায়িত্ব পালন করছেন। এই দম্পতির চার সন্তান, আটজন নাতি-নাতনী এবং ১০ জন প্রো-পৌত্র রয়েছে।
প্রিন্স ফিলিপের মৃত্যুতে শোক জানিয়ে ব্রিটিশ প্রধানমন্ত্রী বরিস জনসন বলেছেন, তিনি অগণিত তরুণকে অনুপ্রাণিত করে গেছেন।
গত ১৭ ফেব্রুয়ারি অসুস্থ বোধ করায় ‘সতর্কতামূলক ব্যবস্থা হিসেবে’ ‘ডিউক অব এডেনবার্গ’ প্রিন্স ফিলিপকে হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করা হয়েছিল।
ব্রিটিশ রাজপ্রাসাদ বাকিংহাম প্যালেস এক বিবৃতিতে জানিয়েছিল, অসুস্থ হওয়ার পর সতকর্তামূলক ব্যবস্থা হিসেবে ব্যক্তিগত চিকিৎসকের পরামর্শে প্রিন্স ফিলিপকে হাসপাতালে নেওয়া হয়। কয়েকদিন ধরে প্রিন্স ফিলিপ অসুস্থ হন। তবে তার অসুস্থতা করোনাভাইরাস সংক্রান্ত ছিল না বলেও ওই বিবৃতিতে জানানো হয়েছিল।
