ইসলামের প্রচার, প্রসার ও উন্নয়নে দেশব্যাপী ৫৬০টি মডেল মসজিদ নির্মাণের প্রকল্প নিয়েছে বাংলাদেশ সরকার। তারই ধারাবাহিকতায় মুজিববর্ষেই ১৭০টি মসজিদের আনুষ্ঠানিক উদ্বোধন করছে সরকার। এই মসজিদ নির্মাণ প্রকল্প নিয়ে প্রতিবেদন প্রকাশ করেছে মধ্যপ্রাচ্যের শক্তিশালী সংবাদমাধ্যম ‘আরব নিউজ’।
প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়, জাতির জনক বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের জন্মশতবার্ষিকী উদযাপনের অংশ হিসেবে ১৭০টি নতুন মসজিদ নির্মাণ করছে বাংলাদেশ সরকার। প্রকল্পের ৫৬০টি মডেল মসজিদ নির্মাণে এক বিলিয়ন ডলার (সাড়ে আট হাজার কোটি টাকা প্রায়) ব্যয় করবে সরকার।
মডেল মসজিদ প্রকল্পের (এমএমপি) উপ-প্রকল্প পরিচালক শফিকুর রহমান তালুকদার আরব নিউজকে বলেছেন, এটি বিশ্বের যেকোনো সরকারের পক্ষে বৃহত্তম মসজিদ প্রকল্প, যেখানে একই সময়ে এত বিপুল সংখ্যক মসজিদ নির্মিত হচ্ছে।
তিনি আরো বলেন, এই প্রকল্পটি বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের জন্মশতবার্ষিকী উপলক্ষে শুরু হয়েছিল, যা স্বাধীনতারও ৫০ বছরের সঙ্গে মিলেছে। এই উদ্যোগে ৫৬০টি মডেল মসজিদ নির্মাণ করা হবে।
