সিলেট কেন্দ্রীয় কারাগারে বৃহস্পতিবার রাতে ফাঁসিতে ঝুলিয়ে এক কয়েদির মৃত্যুদণ্ড কার্যকর করা হয়েছে। ওই আসামির নাম মো. সিরাজুল ইসলাম ওরফে সিরাজ (৫৫)। তার কয়েদি নম্বর-১২৪/এ।
শুক্রবার সকালে সিলেট কেন্দ্রীয় কারাগারের জ্যেষ্ঠ জেল সুপার মুহাম্মদ মঞ্জুর হোসেন স্বাক্ষরিত এ সংবাদ বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে এ তথ্য জানানো হয়।
সংবাদ বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে বলা হয়, বৃহস্পতিবার রাত ১১টার দিকে স্ত্রী হত্যায় দণ্ডাদেশপ্রাপ্ত সিরাজুল ইসলাম ওরফে সিরাজের মৃত্যুদণ্ড কার্যকর করা হয়েছে।
২০০৪ সালে সিরাজুল ইসলাম সিরাজ তার স্ত্রী সাহিদা আক্তার ওরফে সাইদাকে শাবলের আঘাত ও ছুরিকাঘাতে হত্যা করে। এ ঘটনায় হবিগঞ্জ থানায় একটি হত্যা মামলা করা হয়। পরে ২০০৭ সালের ২৮ ফেব্রুয়ারি সিলেটের দ্রুত বিচার ট্রাইবুন্যাল তাকে মৃত্যুদণ্ড ও ১০ হাজার টাকা জরিমানা করেন। পরে হাইকোর্টে সিরাজ জেল আপিল করে। এরপর হাইকোর্ট তার আপিল খারিজ করে দেন। পরে তিনি সুপ্রিম কোর্টের আপিল বিভাগে আবার একটি আপিল করেন। সুপ্রিম কোর্টের আপিল বিভাগও তার আবেদন খারিজ করে দেন। এরপর তিনি রাষ্ট্রপতির কাছে প্রাণ ভিক্ষার আবেদন করেন। তার সেই আবেদনও খারিজ করে দেন রাষ্ট্রপতি।
সিরাজুল ইসলাম ওরফে সিরাজ হবিগঞ্জ জেলার সদর উপজেলার রাজানগর কবরস্থান গ্রামের মৃত আবুল হোসেনের ছেলে।
