ডেস্ক রিপোর্ট : পৃথিবীর আর কোনও দেশে একসঙ্গে দু’টি গভীর সমুদ্রবন্দর নির্মাণের নজির নেই। [৩] বঙ্গোপসাগরের সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কৌশলগত বিন্দু মহেশখালিতে নির্মাণ করা হচ্ছে মাতারবাড়ি বন্দর, এ উপসাগরে বন্দর তৈরির কাজ বাংলাদেশই প্রথম শুরু করেছে।
মাতারবাড়িকে বলা যায় দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়া আর দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার সংযোগস্থল। এই বিন্দুতে অবস্থিত একটি বন্দর খুব সহজেই এশিয়ার দুটি প্রধান অঞ্চলকে সেবা দেওয়ার সক্ষমতা রাখে। সামরিক দিক দিয়েও এই ধরনের একটি বন্দরের গুরুত্ব রয়েছে।
প্রধানতম বন্দর চট্টগ্রামের মূল সমস্যা হলো, এখানে বড় মাদার ভেসেলের বার্থিং সম্ভব নয়। কর্ণফুলীর মোহনার অবস্থিত বন্দরটির ড্রাফট বা গভীরতা মাত্র সাড়ে ৯ মিটার। আর মাতারবাড়ির গভীরতা ১৬ মিটার।
মাতারবাড়িতে সব ধরনের জাহাজ ভিড়তে পারবে। এ কারণে কাছাকাছি নির্মিত এশিয়ার ২য় বৃহত্তম বিশেষ অর্থনৈতিক এলাকায় খুব সহজেই ভারী শিল্প গড়ে তোলা সম্ভব। বন্দরটি নির্মাণ কাজ করছে জাপান, তারা তাদের অটোমোবাইলসহ সকল ভারী শিল্প চীন থেকে বাংলাদেশে সরিয়ে আনতে চায়।
বিশ্বের বৃহত্তম বিশেষ অর্থনৈতিক এলাকা প্রতিষ্ঠা করা হচ্ছে চট্টগ্রামের মীরসরাইতে। মাতারবাড়ি বন্দর থেকে এটিও উপকৃত হবে।
আরেকটি গভীর সমুদ্র বন্দর তৈরি হচ্ছে পটুয়াখালির রাবণাবাদ চ্যানেল ঘেঁষা পায়রায়। এটি গভীরতাও ১৬ মিটারের একটু বেশি। তবে ড্রেজিং করে গভীরতা ২২ মিটার পর্যন্ত নেয়া সম্ভব। এখানেও একটি বিশেষ অর্থনৈতিক জোন প্রতিষ্ঠা করা হচ্ছে।
